In the foreground, resting on cushions, the Baby Jesus sleeps with his head supported in one of his hands. At his side, Our Lady, with a halo about her head, holds a very fine veil in both hands. To Our Lady's right side, a female figure richly dressed and with her head adorned with jewels and pearls, holds a palm in her left hand; on the other side, there is a group of four angels, one of whom holds a trumpet and another two roses. A harp is visible behind this group.

This canvas is a copy of an Italian painting, today in the Louvre, offered to Louis XIV in 1697. The author of the original was Carlo Maratta (1625-1713), and the title “Sommeil de l' Enfant Jésus.”
