Imitation of oriental lacquer work applied to pieces of furniture was practiced in various countries of Europe. This bookcase conforms to English joinery and techniques. The top cabinet, finished with an undulating pediment of oriental influence, is closed with two mirrored doors. The interior of the desk section is compartmentalised with pigeon holes and drawers, and a secret compartment hidden behind a sliding panel. Between the desk section and top cabinet, there are two candle slides which when pulled forward served to hold candles, whose light was reflected and amplified by the mirrored doors. The decoration, of Chinese inspiration, depicts buildings, peasants, birds and trees in gold relief on a black ground.
