The occasion of the bicentenary of Almeida Garrett's birth (1799-1854), provides the motive for studying the artistic context of romanticism, introduced into Portugal by literary works of this writer. His influence is recognized on the art of his time through criticism in the Jornal das Belas-Artes, founded under his direction.
